Virginia Tech building, Alexandria, VA

Savings achieved: 10-15% reduction in total electricity usage


The first WiseBldg demonstration site is the Virginia Tech building located in Alexandria, VA hosting the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) and Center for Public Administration and Policy (CPAP).  This building has an approximate area of 25,000 square feet, and consumes about 14-25 MWh per month.  Its peak load occurs in summer and the peak load is about 61 kW. Monthly electricity bill is about $2,000 per month.



WiseBldg deployment in this building includes:

  • Six (6) Wi-Fi thermostats 

  • Six (6) Modbus power meters

  • One (1) Wi-Fi environmental sensor that can detect CO2 level, noise and humidity

  • One cloud-based BEMOSS®-Plus

The figure below demonstrates HVAC electricity consumption before WiseBldg deployment (in June 2014) as compared to that after WiseBldg deployment deployment (in June 2016).  HVAC consumption was reduced by 27% after WiseBldg was installed.
